About

Intercity Transit’s Bicycle Commuter Challenge (BCC) is a fun, free community event that encourages people of all ages and abilities to try bicycling as a means of transportation.

The BCC started in 1988 with about 30 participants as a challenge between a few workplaces in Olympia. Since then, the event has “grown up” along with its level of participation. In 2006 Intercity Transit began hosting the event and is now one of Intercity Transit’s many programs for improving mobility and the quality of life in our community.

The BCC and its affiliated events including the Winter BCC in February, the Earth Day Market Ride in April, and Bike-To-Work Day in May encourage participants to develop transportation habits that are sustainable, livable and healthy. Participants come together to celebrate their accomplishments in June at the Prize Hoopla when we award prizes and hold random prize drawings.

Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, volunteers and participants, the Bicycle Commuter Challenge is now in its 31st year!

Frequently Asked Questions

If this is your first time here:

Click on the red “Create Account” button and fill in the required information. Choose a team from the drop-down menu. If you don't see your team or want to start a new team, you can create one after registering, and then add yourself to it on your account page. Please look carefully for your team in the dropdown menu before creating a new team- duplicate teams are a pain! Thanks!

Next, you can optionally add family members to your account, such as children or other participating family members with whom you share an email address. This is different than creating a team. This feature is to allow children or others without their own email account to particpate in the BCC.

Finally, answer the math question to prove you're not a robot, and click the green "Create New Account" button. A confirmation link will be sent to your email. Click on the link in the email to activate your account.

If you already have an account here: Log in, go to your My Account page, scroll down and choose your team from the drop down menu, then click the green Save button at the bottom of the page. Being on a team is optional. If you were on a team last year, you still have to follow the steps above, to re-join your team.

Then, log your rides! Only rides logged in May and on April 21 for the Earth Day Market Ride will count towards your BCC total.

  • To join a team when creating your account, simply choose your team's name from the drop-down menu in the form, as part of your registration process.
  • To join a team AFTER creating your account, go to your My Account page (link in blue bar at top), click "Edit", and scroll down to the drop-down Team menu to choose your team.

Yes, sorry for the inconvenience. If you were on a team last year, you will have to re-join your team this year. Go to your account page, scroll down and select your team from the TEAM drop-down menu, then scroll to the bottom and click SAVE.

A team must consist of more than one member. Teams with only one member will not be recognized by the BCC as a team, and can't win team prizes or recognition. If you create a team, get busy and recruit some team mates :-) Thanks for understanding!

  1. You can only create a new team if you are not already on a team.
  2. Please look carefully in the Team dropdown on your account page to make sure you are not about to duplicate an existing team. Duplicate teams are a headache, so thanks for understanding!
  3. Look for the Recent Team Activity box (or My Team's Activity bar, on a mobile device).
  4. Click on the blue Create a Team button, and enter a team name, and an optional description of your team.
  5. Your team is now created, but you still need to add yourself to it! Go to your My Account page (link in top blue bar (or in the hamburger on a mobile device), scroll down to the Team dropdown, and select your team. Then scroll to the bottom and click Save.
  6. Recruit members, log your rides, and Go Team!!

There's no requirement to join a team but many people find it more fun and motivating to be part of a team. Teams require two or more people and can be made up of coworkers, class mates, friends or family. To win team prizes, teams must be registered with the BCC. Teams can win prizes in the following categories:

  • Most days ridden per team
  • Highest average days ridden per rider
  • Most new riders recruited

The BCC runs during the month of May. You can sign up starting April 1.

Anyone who lives or works within Thurston County.

The BCC is about using your bike instead of your car to get around. If you bike for errands, to go out for the evening, or to visit a friend, you can count those miles for the BCC. Also, if you participate in our Earth Day Market Ride, you can count that mileage toward your BCC mileage.

Everyone wins in the BCC! Everyone who reports miles gets coupons and everyone is entered into prize drawings.

We want people to try biking instead of driving. For people who are new to bicycle commuting, this will be a challenge. We also want people to come back every year motivated to try harder and bike more. People who bike 10 or more days get an extra page of coupons, and will be entered to win our grand prize bike trip with Adventure Cycling. Also, teams compete for prizes and recognition based how many new riders they recruit, and how many days their members ride.

The BCC is about using your bicycle for transportation instead of a car. Please only count trips with a practical destination, such as work, school, errands or other trips you might otherwise have made by car.

Only miles biked for transportation in Thurston County count toward your BCC mileage. If your transportation miles take place in Pierce County consider taking part in Bike Month Tacoma-Pierce County.

Paper mileage logs are available starting April 1 at the Olympia Transit Center. Mileage logs must be completed and returned by June 5, 2018.

The Grand Prize winner will be chosen by an electronic random drawing among “Adult” and “Senior” BCC participants who logged rides on 10 days or more in the 2018 Bicycle Commuter Challenge.
